Duets of this nature are not to everyone's taste but these three polkas should appeal to all piccolo aficionados. They are all remarkably similar but each has it's own individual style. Tracoline starts with a flourish on the piano leading into a cadenza for both piccolos. The ensuing Polka has the instruments trading arpeggios between them or harmonising lots of notes in 3rds or 6ths. Piccolinette starts with a narrative story of love (in French) before the piccs launch into birdsong, swirling about and dovetailing. The Polka finds the two instruments almost inseparable in terms of rhythm and locked together again in 3rds and 6ths. My favourite is Le Nid, which kicks off with a nice tune (including a piano solo!) and the Polka has a little more variation in rhythm than the other two. Whilst being virtuoso sounding, they are not as difficult as some pieces in the repertoire and they're really great fun.
