The tremendous popularity of the flute during the Nineteenth Century is well documented, but quality repertoire for our instrument during this period has been in short supply. We see, by the sheer number of flutes produced, as well as the significant changes to the instrument brought forward by Boehm and others, that the instrument made striking advances in tone and technical possibility. There has to have been good repertoire - treasures lost due to changing tastes and publishers who did not survive. As an editor of Falls House Press, I have made a serious effort to find and publish quality works from this era. We now publish the beautiful Concerti of Langer, Romberg, Cottignes, and even the reconstruction of Tchaikovsky's now-popular Concertstück. The duets of Gabrielski and Berbeguier as well as the beautiful works for flute and piano of Jadassohn and Demerssemann are again available and being regularly featured on programs worldwide.

It is surprising, given how often flutists have seen his name, that Kaspar Kummer (1795-1870) is not better known. Details of his life are few, yet he has left us many excellent compositions. His Duets as well as his Etudes for solo flute*, are the best known. Falls House is proud to release the beautiful Quintet for two flutes, viola, cello, and guitar. I first performed this wonderful piece with Jan Boland and Red Cedar Chamber Music in February of this year in Iowa. We later toured with the piece and recorded it for the Fleur de Son label. In August we presented a performance for the British Flute Society's International Convention in Manchester, England. Trevor Wye commented that Kummer is his favorite Nineteenth Century composer! We hope you enjoy this great addition to the chamber music repertoire.
