This flute is the lasting result of 30 years of research and fascination with the famed Louis Lot flutes, as well as other vintage French flutes. At last the secret of these fine flutes has been defined with the production of 'Altus Silver™'. This supreme material has the ability to produce expressive effects as excellent as the highly valued older flutes. Consisting of numerous materials and designed with Altus special seaming, this flute once again exemplifies Altus' commitment to create flutes that offer beauty of sound far beyond what is possible with conventional materials.
Unique and outstanding. The AL ('Altus Limited') is produced from a special alloy which is exclusive to Altus, similar in composition to the materials used by vintage French flute craftsmen (Louis Lot, Bonneville etc). In addition, the headjoint and body tube of the AL are 'seamed': this is the method by which the tubes of historical French flute makers were produced, and results in a very light weight flute with a distinctive sound. Combining the exclusive metal and seamed tube with state-of-the-art flutemaking results in a mind-blowing instrument, reliable and with that coveted 'vintage flute' sound.
A Flute with Provenance
It is rare indeed to have a flute for sale with the kind provenance that this instrument has. This flute has until recently been played by Gareth Davies, Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra. This flute has been played before one of the largest audiences of all time where an estimated 900 million people watched the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games (where the LSO were joined by Mr Bean), and can be heard in many of their recordings and film soundtracks:
Ravel - Daphnis et Chloé - Valery Gergiev/LSO
Debussy - L'apres-midi d'un faune - Valery Gergiev/LSO
Mahler - Symphony No 9 - Valery Gergiev/LSO
Mendelssohn - A Midsummer Night's Dream - John Eliot Gardiner - LSO Live
Frank Bridge - Four Short Pieces
Mendelssohn - Symphony No 1 - LSO/Gardiner
Knehans - Tempest Flute Concerto - Brno Philharmonic/Mikel Toms
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2
Rise of the Guardians
- The Monuments Men
- The Imitation Game
Gareth Davies - A Few Words on the AL
"I played this flute between 2009 and 2017, so anything that I recorded during that period is on this instrument. The headjoint that comes with the instrument was made for me at the Altus factory as I watched. It is a different cut which gives more resistance than the standard cut and has a darker sound and a richer palette of colours in my opinion. When I was given the head at the factory, I loved it. You'll notice that it has no bands on it like a normal AL headjoint. The artist who made the head asked if I wanted them put on. I asked if it would change the sound. He said that it would. I liked the sound as it was so they decided to leave them off. It is a unique headjoint.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing the instrument but have moved on now. I hate to see a good instrument sitting in a cupboard at home and hope someone else gets as much enjoyment out if it as I have."
