Jazz Keys is a brand-new series of five books of short pieces, designed to develop students’ sight-reading skills and awareness of key, using fun material which supports the sight-reading requirements of the ABRSM examination board. In the same manner as FunKey!, its piano counterpart, Jazz Keys contains pieces in a variety of styles, notably rock, swing and Latin, increasing progressively in difficulty from Level 1 up to Level 5. The principal intentions of Jazz Keys are as follows: • To encourage the students’ desire to sight-read regularly, and to change an element of flute playing which is often seen as intimidating into a pleasurable one. • To improve: – the reading of notation and its association with the instrument – rhythmic awareness and confidence, and the ability to play fluently – knowledge of, and familiarity with, an increasing number of keys. The pieces first appear in C major/A minor, then in a series of other keys corresponding to the needs of the comparable examination grade. The experience of playing the same music, but with the required sharps and flats, reinforces the students’ sense of key, and their understanding of transposition. Each book comes with an accompanying CD, which has a backing track for every piece, and an additional track with melody incorporated for the first key. The tempo of the accompaniments is deliberately on the cautious side, even in pieces where the performance direction indicates a quick speed. This is to build up the students’ confidence in using an accompaniment, and to encourage fluency. Quavers should be played as straight 8s unless indicated to be swung. Dynamics in brackets are to be played on the repeat.
