“Challenging!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

If you're a fan of difficult contemporary music then this energetic work is definitely for you. It's programmatic -  a day in the life of a dragon.  The modern techniques used are very imaginative. The 'reptilian hiss' involves air only, there are pitch bends, trilling whilst flutter tonguing, and four note 'hyper-trills' which are very effective. It's the powerful rhythmic drive that really excites here though and you'll have a great time performing it!

From the Publisher

Dragon Flight for flute and piano by Howard Buss is a colorful and engaging work that evokes a fantasy world in which a dragon awakens and takes flight. It received its world premiere by Marianne Gedigian on February 28, 2009 at The Atlanta Flute Fair hosted by Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston, Georgia. The work was re-edited in 2011 and recorded by the renowned Italian flutist, Elena Cecconi and pianist Federico Brunello on the CD Flute & Piano in Concert on the Bottega Discantica (Milan, Italy) label - Discantica 237.

Performance notes: A number of 4-note hyper trills are employed in this work. The pitches for each hyper trill are written in parenthesis. The notes in each hyper trill are to be performed in a random pattern, beginning and ending on the pitch notated on the staff.

The "reptilian hiss" effect in the flute part is done by forcing air through the instrument. The aim is to create a menacing hiss that contains no actual flute tone if at all possible. A whistling quality is acceptable as long as it is much more "air" than "whistle". Depending upon the acoustics of the performance hall, in order to achieve a pure hiss at the desired volume it may be helpful for the flutist to use a microphone with amplification.
