Odd Bedfellows for Flute and Tuba (or Bassoon) [Playing score]
- Editor's Choice
“It's all in the title!”
There are not so many pieces in the repertoire for flute and tuba so sadly Odd Bedfellows will have a limited number of performance opportunities. This is another gem from Gary Schocker though and if you do happen across a tuba player with nothing much to do, mastering this piece would be a great way to spend time together. It's a workout for both players. Tuba stereo-types are mostly avoided, although Under the Big Top inevitably has a more traditional look to it. Some of the bass part looks like it was written for a flute, with grace notes, running passagework and the use of colourful melody contributing to the varying textures used over the course of each movement. You could perform it with a bassoon but it wouldn't be half so much fun - it's all in the title!
From the Publisher
Composed for the unusual combination of Flute and Tuba, Odd Bedfellows may also be performed with Bassoon. Movement 1 is titled “At the Hippo Watering Hole,” and is full of scenic imagery. The beautiful Movement 2 takes place “Among the Pine Barrens” and features tuneful Tuba writing in its tenor register from middle C up to G. The playful Movement 3 is a game “In and Out the Window,” leading to Movement 4 “Under the Big Top.”
