From the Publisher

Church reformist Martin Luther (1483-1546), the translator of the Bible and author of seminal theological books, was an enthusiastic singer, flautist and lute player for all of his life.

It was, therefore, of no surprise that, to convey his message, Luther composed songs that spoke to the head and the heart with their clear and enthralling language and powerful melodies. The 38 surviving songs were thankfully received and sung, not only in church services but also in everyday life. Luther is considered the father of evangelical church song, as his songs enabled the people to actively form and participate in church services.
