Sean Talty is an Uilleann Pipe and traditional flute maker. Born in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare, he started playing the whistle when he was five years of age, then to the flute and on to the pipes at age 12.
As he was born into a family with music on both sides, it was inevitable that music would play a big part in his life. Both grandmothers played music, as did both his parents. His father Martin, along with his life long friend Willie Clancy, together learned to play the pipes from Johnny Doran when he came to stag in the West Clare area. The music and piping goes back further to Sean's great grandfather Michael Carrol, who was a wood flute player. Sean' son Cian carries on the tradition and is also a piper.
Sean has a background in cabinet making and carpentry; these skills, combined with his musical skills, are an ideal combination for his work as an Uilleann Pipe and traditional flute maker.
We are proud to be the only supplier in the UK of these remarkable flutes. These instruments are beautifully turned from the highest quality Grenadilla wood and principally tuned in the key of D, although other keys are available on request.
These flutes are free blowing across the whole range and offer a beautiful sonorous, resonant sound. A choice of headjoints are available to choose from for the discerning player both in nickel lined and unlined models. Each joint is stylishly finished with brass ferrules which enhance the look of the instrument and ensures the flute is a pleasure to own.
