Product Reviews: And Everything is Still… for Flute and Piano

I first heard this piece performed by Paul Edmund-Davies at the National Flute Association convention in Charlotte, North Carolina (USA) in August 2011 and was entranced. It was part of an hour-long recital of music of British composer Andy Scott, and I immediately sought to find printed copies of the works I had heard. They are not available in the US so I was very happy that my Internet search led me to justflutes.com. The title of the work comes from a poem in a collection for children by Lemn Sissay. The melody is simple and haunting, and is played through twice. In the second presentation the melody is ornamented in such a way that it sounds like a jazz improvisation. The composer is a saxophonist who writes serious music with a jazz inflection. My students heard me play it and immediately everyone wanted to perform it on our upcoming recital. This work and several others for flute and piano, flute and guitar, alto flute and CD, and other instruments, have been released on a CD titled "The Bad Tempered Flute". Well worth seeking out.
