Odelette [Flute Choir], Op162

“Lovely music in an inspirational setting.”
Odelette is a lovely piece which will always present a challenge for a flute player. This transcription keeps the original solo part intact, and it will also stretch the ensemble skills of those playing the accompanying parts. For the most part their role is purely supportive but there are some tricky corners which will need care to maintain the seamless burble of Saint-Saens piano writing. Flutes 1 and 2 have some of the solo material, so you will need more than just one strong player. It's a great way to get everyone involved in such wonderful music though, and access to this style for the less experienced can only be completely inspiring!
From the Publisher
This lesser known work by Saint-Saens is an arrangement of a concerto-like piece for flute and orchestra. In a loose rondo form, the main theme is a decorated scale. Entries of this theme are interspersed with long, almost hymn-like tunes and florid scale and arpeggio patterns. The music passes seamlessly through several keys exploring different moods and aspects of the flute, reaching a climax almost two thirds of the way in to the piece, before a beautifully calm coda lets the music float away.
This is a piece that deserves to be much better known. As a single movement solo piece, it’s a great way for a player to begin to get some experience at playing in an ensemble situation. The solo line is demanding, but not excessively so. The ensemble parts are generally straightforward, first flute needs to be a confidant strong player.
Difficulty level, roughly compared to ABRSM exam grades. 0 is beginner, 9 is advanced (beyond grade 8).
