“What a piece!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - chrish@justflutes.com

What a piece this is and very interesting to perform. The alto part is a joy and the effects on the CD really enhance Lemn Sissay's evoctive and thought-provoking text. Synchronising with the track is a skill, but there are some pointers along the way to help the ensemble. This would add so much to a flute recital - give it a go and see!

Our Description

'My Mountain Top' has proved to be one of Andy's most popular works, being recorded nine times to date and performed worldwide; from the original scoring for saxophone quartet, to subsequent arrangements that have been undertaken by the composer for solo saxophone, euphonium, tuba, baritone horn and now alto flute!

Paul Edmund-Davies suggested that the mood and darkness of 'My Mountain Top' may well be best captured by the performer playing alto flute, as opposed to flute. The results may be heard on the CD 'The Bad Tempered Flute - The Flute Music of Andy Scott' (Nimbus Alliance 6156), performed by Paul.

Composed in 1998, as a commission from the ISCM World Music Days for the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Andy collaborated with poet Lemn Sissay to produce 'My Mountain Top'. The piece commences with a crackle on the accompanying CD, representing lying under the gaze of the sun & feeling the heat on your skin. The rhythmically free opening alto flute statements represent a mind that is active with thoughts but which gradually floats into a semi-conscious state. At this point warm keyboard pads emerge and the stage is set for Lemn's magical words. The solo alto flute part weaves its way around the voice, gesturing and supporting, but never overpowering.

'My Mountain Top' (alto flute version) was premiered by Paul Edmund-Davies at the National Flute Association Convention, Charlotte, USA in August 2011.
