“What a great piece!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - chrish@justflutes.com

In this highly atmospherice piece for large flute orchestra Gareth McLearnon has shifted the focus on to the lower flutes. Altos, basses and contra basses, which are becoming ever more popular, take centre stage and the result is piece full of drama and unusual colours. Imaginative use of the extended techniques enhance the texure throughout, creating the eerie opening with jet whisles and residual tone, and using explosive articulations to set up the riff which develops into a swirling climax. This also a very practical piece with the parts ranging in difficulty from grade 4 to grade 8, enabling more players to access this type of writing. Cosmic Dawn takes us on that journey from darkness to daylight - it will be great to be able to join in!

From the Publisher

First premiered at the Australian Flute Festival in Brisbane in July 2017 - this piece is in two parts - a slow, moody, primordial beginning, where a dark ritualistic, bass (and optional contrabass) flute melody sets the scene with Jet Whistle accompaniment. Then what follows is a super rhythmic and angular groove, guaranteed to energise and thrill the participants as well as the audience! The final section of the piece is without a doubt the richest and most complex flute writing I've undertaken to date.

Instrumentation:
