People want to learn music for very different reasons, whether it is to prepare for a music career, to pass exams, or for pleasure.

I aim to teach a pupil in a way that best suits their own learning style and musical tastes and to guide them through the exam systems (if that is what they wish) using repertoire that is relevant to their individual needs and preferences.

No two students are the same and I try to reflect that in my teaching.

I often produce my own materials to meet a student's needs, especially in the early stages

of learning a musical instrument.

Above all, I believe that music should be taught musically and I strive to inspire my students rather than merely to instruct them.

ABOUT ME

I am a professional musician specialising in flute clarinet and saxophone but also offering other instrumental and theory/composition lessons and if I can't teach it,

I can usually recommend someone that can.

As well as teaching full time I play in a number of orchestras and work as a freelance musician for orchestras, big bands, blues bands, and musical theatre and for celebrations and functions.

I am qualified to Postgraduate level and hold a current Disclosure Scotland Certificate.

LESSONS AND RATES

I teach at my own home where I have an extensive collection of sheet music and recordings as well as instruments that can be hired for use in lessons. However, If you prefer and if you are within a certain radius of the city centre (essentially within the boundary of the city bypass), I can come to you for a small additional charge. Video lessons are also available.

Lessons start at £25 but, if you book a block of 5 or 10 lessons, discounts are available.

SUMMER PROGRAMMES

Don't let the music stop just because school does.

It's weeks until the schools go back.

Why not book a course of 5 lessons to make the holiday a memorable and productive one.

Stop the children getting bored, learn a new skill or refresh an old one or learn enough to be able to help your children while they are away from their usual teacher (they'll love having the opportunity to 'help' you with your own practice).

       GIVE A GIFT

I would be happy to prepare a gift voucher for you to offer as a gift for a special occasion. Please contact me and share your thoughts and we will come up with a plan together

DISTANCE IS NO OBJECT

Video lessons are now a 'thing' and I can teach using Skype, Zoom, or Facetime if you are not in the Edinburgh area. During the quarantine, lessons have continued without so much as a bump in the routine. For children, we have been able to use imaginative and often humorous backgrounds and the digital format has allowed people who would not normally have a chance to meet to combine their efforts to create a number of exciting video collage projects.
