As a first wood piccolo, the YPC62 is a good instrument, with the same durable keywork as found on the Yamaha YPC32 piccolo, and a grenadilla-wood headjoint and body which mellows the sound. There are two models available: the standard YPC62 (which has always been the most popular model, with wood headjoint) and the more recent YPC62M (with a silverplated headjoint taken from the YPC32).
At around the same price, the Pearl PFP105 piccolo and Pearl PFP165 piccolo is an essential comparison to be made. This is a made from a material called Grenaditte, which has the same acoustic properties as wood but does not crack. The design is based on the legendary Hans Reiner piccolos, which are sought by professional players the world over. Plus, it is the only piccolo at this price to have French-style Pointed key-arms.
"The YPC62 wooden piccolo is an excellent instrument for those wishing to combine flute and piccolo playing in an orchestral or ensemble setting. The hard wearing materials make this instrument extremely durable, and the well spaced keywork means that playing remains comfortable."
