For the last 16 years we have set the standard
for flute summer
schools...students from
around the world come to improve their skills by enjoying world-class tuition
in a wonderfully friendly,
non-competitive and supportive environment. Everyone can
benefit from the course...come
and be inspired. Tuition is tailored to different skill
levels, including an
intensive course for advanced players and a performance
course to conservatoire
level. As well as coaching in technique in master-classes
and private lessons, there is the opportunity to play with chamber ensembles, flute choirs
and group sessions...there will be plenty of time for discussion and advice
on all matters flute...orchestral
playing, audition preparation, teaching, career planning,
the list is endless. In addition to a 600-seat concert hall, there are studios and practice rooms.
But it’s not all hard work. You will have an individual room to
relax in, three full
meals a day, as well as a superb swimming pool and tennis courts
for those who prefer more active relaxation. All this is set in the glorious Surrey Hills
countryside, perfect for contemplative walks and wanderings. And every
day you can just sit back and listen to performances by some of the
country’s leading artists. There is a
shop on site with experienced staff to recommend and advise on sensible
upgrades if you are thinking of changing
your instrument and a good selection of CDs, music and accessories
to try-and-buy.

The Performance Course:
Following the format of the last few years, this course offers a
morning class with either Clare, Ian
or Louise,
individual lessons with
Louise or Gary,
master-classes, choir and chamber music. We recommend a
minimum standard of approx. grade 3 in order to benefit fully
from the course.

Cost:
Full week including accommodation and meals: £595.00
Part week visitors are welcome to attend. The
charge is £110.00
per day including overnight accommodation and meals.
The Intensive Course:
Clare and Ian will lead this course for
advanced
players, offering the
opportunity to explore in depth all areas of flute performance and
technique. This will include: tone production, finger technique,
articulation, interpretation, contemporary techniques. There will be a
limited number of places available on this course, so early booking is
advisable. We recommend a minimum standard of ideally post grade 8 in
order to benefit fully from the course.

Altus Flutes UK Scholarship:
We are able to offer one full bursary scholarship to attend the
performance course which is awarded by Altus Flutes UK. This is
discretionary and may be awarded for outstanding ability and/or cases
of financial hardship. Students wishing to apply should send a tape/CD
of their playing and a letter of personal circumstances to the Course
Administrator. The successful applicant can attend the intensive course
by paying the course fee difference of GBP80.00. Closing date: 20 June
2008.

About the Tutors:
Clare Southworth
enjoys a highly successful and varied career and has
established an International reputation as performer, teacher and
author. Clare has won prizes in many prominent competitions, including
First Prize Winner of America’s National Flute Association
Competition and Prize Winner of the Madeira International Flute
Competition. Clare was formerly Principal Flute with Aquarius, with
whom she made several commercial recordings, and has worked with many
of the country’s leading orchestras. She has also recorded two
acclaimed CD’s, Sonatas and Classic Touch.
Clare is recognized as one of the world’s leading flute teachers
and was Professor of Flute at the RNCM for 17 years. She is now
Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Because of her
versatility, she is in great demand as performer and master-class
presenter, with invitations from America to Japan. Her books "Flute
Aerobics", "Light Aerobics" and "Sequentials" published by Just Flutes
Edition, have become bestsellers. Two new books out this year are "The
Expression of Colour" and two transcriptions of the Bach 'Cello Suites.
Clare is delighted to be an International Miyazawa Artist and plays a
Platinum Miyazawa Flute.
Ian Clarke is
acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in
the flute world. His compositions have been performed across
five
continents on stages ranging from the South Bank to
Glastonbury.
These works are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting
flute repertoire of today and are being embraced by internationally
acclaimed performers, teachers, colleges & students alike. A
prize-winning student, Ian studied with Simon Hunt, Averil Williams and
Kate Lukas of the Guildhall School of Music, London. He concurrently
studied Mathematics at Imperial College, London graduating with
Honours. Ian is professor of flute at the Guildhall School of Music
& Drama. Ian works extensively with musician/composer Simon
Painter
writing, producing and performing music for film & television
under
the name of Diva Music with numerous recordings between them and
applications from Microsoft to Oprah Winfrey!
Louise Matthew
studied flute with John Grant and Helen Brew at the RSAMD, Peter
Lloyd and Clare Southworth at the RNCM, and Sarah Newbold at the
Guildhall. Louise has performed with the RSNO, LSO, SCO and
D’Oyly Carte and with her flute ensemble Just Flutes. In 1993
Just Flutes Quartet won a scholarship to study at the Banff Centre
of the Arts in Canada. Shortly after they were prizewinners of
RSAMD Chamber Music Prize, the John Tunnell Trust Competition,
and the Royal Overseas League. Louise has a strong commitment to
music education and has worked with the education departments of
the Hanover Band, the Halle, the LSO, ETO, ENO, the RSNO,
Children’s Music Workshop and Flutewise. She is a dedicated
specialist flute teacher working at schools in north London, in
her own private teaching practice, and is Course Director for
Tuttiflutey summer music course. Louise coaches for National
Youth Wind Ensemble, National Youth Wind Orchestra, Hertfordshire
Wind Orchestra and runs courses for Musicale Holidays. She has
recently gained a PGCE qualification in secondary music from the
Institute of Education, which has enabled her to explore
and develop her interest in music education. Louise is currently
training to be an Associated Board Examiner.
Gary Woolf studied
with Pat Lynden at the London College of Music and
graduated having one many prizes for his flute playing including a
Silver Medal awarded by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Whilst at
the London College he took part in master-classes with Geoffrey
Gilbert, Trevor Wye, Clare Southworth, Wissarn Boustany and
Göran
Marcusson. Gary is now residing, playing and teaching in Germany. For
fun he sings with two choirs and learns German but still finds time to
play concerts, visit family and to teach on the course at Woldingham!
Tim Carey (Flute
Course Accompanist) lives in Chelmsford and continues
to enjoy a career full of variety, as solo performer, chamber-music
player, orchestral keyboard player and teacher. He now spends his time
partnering many different instrumentalists, especially flautists, in a
large variety of chamber-music combinations, as well as giving the
occasional solo recital or concerto performance. He is the regular
pianist for the Flutewise series, and many other flute events in
England, America and elsewhere. As orchestral keyboard player he has
worked in the past with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Bournemouth
Orchestras, the Philharmonia and currently with the Ulster Orchestra in
Northern Ireland. He is much in demand as a teacher throughout his home
county of Essex.
When not actively involved in musical pursuits, Tim still finds time
for his other interests which include languages, restoring cars and
flying.
