The Thumbport is a revolution in holding the flute. By providing additional support and improving the balance of the instrument, it reduces strain and stress on the hands, and allows for greater freedom in finger movement. Simple to clip-on and doesn't scratch or otherwise damage the finish of the instrument. Supplied in a cloth pouch. Available in a range of colours to really customise your flute!
Also available for piccolo and alto flute. The Pinkieport index-finger rest is also available.
Recommended by William Bennett, Emily Beynon and Wissam Boustany, amongst many others.
"The Thumbport allows greater balance in holding the flute. It is comprised of a C-shaped shell and a thumb-like extension. The Thumbport helps the player to place the right hand at an efficient spot and provides additional support.
"The Thumbport guides the player's right thumb to support the flute at an angle. The force created at this angle is the sum of two partial vectors: one supports the flute from below, and the other counters horizontal rotation. The extension arm rests on the thumb gently, which easily prevents the flute from rolling backwards."
I was recommended the thumb port by another player and teacher at a workshop I attended. They are almost impossible to buy in Australia, so I ordered one and tried it out. Now I won't play without it! I use it with most of my students - beginners to advanced players - and they love it too. It helps to create the three-point-hold that makes for good hand position and balance. I've found that I can play difficult passages much more easily, and have a lot more control. I can also play for longer periods without becoming fatigued. Such a simple thing, but works wonders!

I'm happy to have found this - it is very helpful for young beginners in that stage when they don't have a comfortable grasp on the instrument and that right thumb slides up around the flute. Such a simple device which gives them a solid grip and hence a good right hand position. Only downside, in my opinion, is the price! Especially for a product 'made in China'. Why can't this be produced here, at a more affordable price?
