Description
Stephen Wessel flutes are designed to be ultra-lightweight:
- Stainless steel mechanism: stainless steel is 25% lighter than silver, but about three times harder, allowing the mechanism to be thinner and lighter.
- Resin inlaid key cups: By "scooping out" the steel key cups and inlaying it with black plastic, the weight of the mechanism is reduced further.
These features make the flute very responsive, instantly playable and with a large palette of tone colours. Stephen Wessel flutes are beautifully made, with strong keywork which feels comfortable and secure. Please note that these flutes are supplied without a headjoint, allowing you to fully customise your instrument. Headjoints which we recommend to go with this body are those by Ian McLauchlan (also recommended by Stephen Wessel himself), especially the headjoint with Adler-style wings; and those by Mancke Flutes.
Manufacturer's Description
"By combining the best of contemporary materials and innovative detail with traditional practice we are producing first rate instruments well known for their musical qualities. Among these should be mentioned evenness of sound throughout the compass, plenty of tonal colour, abundant carrying power and outstanding intonation. They have been compared favourably with the flutes of Louis Lot, well loved by London players."
"Keywork is in stainless steel, with an optional black inlay on all keys. As steel is much stronger, stiffer and lighter than the materials normally used for keywork there can be less of it; this has a hugely beneficial effect on the sound and responsiveness, while the reduced mechanical inertia provides a valuable aid to rapid playing."
