This is a beautifully atmospheric piece from the young Shiva Fershareki. She won the BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year in 2004 and has had a glittering career so far. From this piece you can easily see why. It is intelligently written for the bass, and whilst it does stretch the range a little it all works very well. There are tonal directions ('losing focus and airy' for example) which enable the performer to exactly understand the intended effect. The glissandi use quarter tones and the music also indicates a wide vibrato. Overall it is well worth playing and a great advert for the bass flute.
Description:
'She Cried, which was originally written for untrained female voice, is a simple, melancholic piece, reflecting the isolation and loneliness of a singleton living in the capital. The organic construction of the piece, compliments the heart-breakingly mellow tone of the bass flute.' Shiva Fershareki
