Description
The Instruments
Flutes d'amour have been known since the eighteenth century and the recent international revival of these delightful instruments has its origins in the 1960's when Trevor Wye acquired a wooden Radcliffe System Bb flute formerly owned by the renowned soloist John Amadio and made by Rudall Carte in the early 1920's. (This is used for Scaramouche and the Minute Waltz).
Trever Wye had modern Boehm flute versions made for him both in Bb and in the deeper toned pitch of A, using the same bore size of 20.4mm, as used by Rudall Carte in their Radcliffe System.
For the Latin American pieces, the flute used is a Louis Lot made in 1874.
The Music
There is almost nothing written for the flute d'amour and so, following on from the flute d'amour players of the past, the repertoire is borrowed from any available source that works well.
Of the items here, only the Tulou and Sibelius' Scaramouche were written for the flute. Of the remainder, Consolation No. 3, the Minute Waltz and Automne were originally piano solos. Melody in F, Rondino and Sicilienne were for violin and Rondinello was for saxophone.
The Latin American Bouquet pieces are all taken from Trevor Wye's Latin American Albums volumes 1 & 2, published by Novello for flute and piano. Most of the pieces originate from Venezuela.
