Yamamoto Perpetuo started out life as a work for solo violin before Nyman himself turned it into a string quartet. Andy Findon's arrangement draws on both versions to produce a substantial virtuoso flute solo. In 11 sections, the work is unmistakeably Nyman in character and the minimalist rhythmic and motivic repetitions weave their magic spell on the listener. For the performer it represents a big challenge - rhythmic discipline, technical fluency and stamina are fully tested in a piece lasting half an hour. Most of the sections have contrasts within them, usually of both speed and rhythmic emphasis, but 2 and 4 remain constant and number 5 even has a hint of an Andersen study lurking within its pages! There are also a couple of calmer numbers in which everyone can draw breath. The arrangements are excellent. Andy is a member of the Michael Nyman Band and his instinctive understanding of the music he has produced leaps out at you from every page. If you don't know Nymans's music, this is like being thrown in the deep end. If you like Nyman's music this is a must!
