Just Flutes Description
The Jupiter JFL313S "Prodigy" flute is designed for very small beginners to start flute on. Its reduced amount of keywork (Jupiter have left off any mechanism not needed through the beginning grades) makes it very light and easy to balance. The remaining keys are re-aligned so that little hands can hold it comfortably, and the curved headjoint means less stretching. The instrument needs no assembling, since it fits in the case in one piece. Ideal for players on Suzuki method, or for those moving up from the fife. Many teachers have purchased Prodigy flutes to rent out to their pupils, and they find that their costs are covered quickly.

How is the Prodigy different to normal curved head flutes?
The main idea behind the Prodigy is to make it as light as possible, and easy for small hands to balance. With that aim in mind, Jupiter have:

not added any trill keys;
reduced the range to low D instead of low C, with a one-piece body and footjoint;
left off the E mechanism and spatula B flat key;
adjusted the touch-pieces on the keys to bring them closer together

“The Prodigy’s design is the result of a complete evaluation of a standard flute’s components with the goal to encourage early learning and to help the younger player progress faster. Flutes with curved headjoints were the first step. However, they remain full size in fingering, as body and key design went unchanged.

"Unlike violin designs, which were scaled down to half size and smaller to encourage early learning, flute mechanisms seen on instruments played by three year olds are essentially the same as those played by adults. The Prodigy model 313S is a breakthrough in functional design for teaching flute to the very young and those with smaller hands.

"The range is to low D. The D# key is on the body section, eliminating the need for the footjoint. Trill keys are also eliminated. This reduces the overall weight to 12oz (340g), 20% less than a standard model flute with curved headjoint. This also shortens overall length and improves balance for the small player.”
