This is a book that you dip into rather than read cover to cover. Subtitled "101 Inspirational Stories from the World's Best Flute Players", it contains short pieces written by the players about aspects of their careers. It makes for some fascinating reading. There's Wibb on intonation, Galway on life after heart surgery, Robert Dick on an independent path, together with countless tales of success in the face of adversity. Ian Andersen reckons that as he is the only flute player in the rock world he is the best and the worst in his field. Pippa Davies is thought-provoking, Goran Marcusson astonishing, but the book is worth buying just for the wonderful piece by Frances Blaisdell.
