Flute Days

Flute Frenzy!

Flute Frenzy!

When? 24 March 2012 10:00 - 18:00

Where? Education Centre, Winchester Cathedral, SO23 9LS

On 24th March we are holding a flute day unlike those that have been before. The day promises to be very helpful and inspiring for flautists of all standards and ages.  Grade 3+ are welcome from 10am - 4pm, tickets are £25.  A shorter afternoon session will run for beginners to grade 3 standard from 2pm - 4pm and will cost £10.  Come along for a flute frenzy with two of the UK’s leading flautists and educators, plus Europe’s Award-Winning largest supplier of flutes and flute music will be on-site with their specialist flute repairer and instrument maker.  Pick and choose from a selection of classes and have fun with your flute!

Paul Edmund-Davies established his international reputation as flautist and soloist in the twenty years that he was Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra.  For the last ten years Paul has toured extensively, giving recitals, classes and performing concerti in America, Europe, Canada, Australasia, the Middle East and the Far East.  He has also edited several books of music and is currently working on editions of the complete flute works of the hitherto uncelebrated Giuseppe Rabboni.  His latest book, ‘The 28 Day Warm up Book for all Flautists … eventually!’ is now in its second edition.  Paul has performed on more than 50 film sound tracks, including classics such as Star Wars (episodes 1 and 2), Aliens, Braveheart, Harry Potter, Who framed Roger Rabbit? and Honey I shrunk the kids.  In January 2011 Paul was appointed as Principal Flute of English National Opera.  He will be discussing orchestral excerpts, film music, flute technique and taking flute choir sessions.

Sarah Newbold is a member of the Academy of St.Martin in-the-Fields and the New London Orchestra and formerly of both Welsh National Opera and the London Philharmonic. As a freelance player she works with most of the orchestras in Great Britain and regularly with the Philharmonia and London Symphony Orchestra.  Teaching plays an important part in Sarah's musical life, she has been a professor of flute at the Guildhall School since 1989 and in 2011 joined the staff at the RWCMD.  She is a regular coach for the National Youth Orchestra both for their open days and recently the main orchestra courses. Sarah is sought after as an adjudicator and examiner, regularly gives masterclasses and recitals in Britain and abroad.  She will be introducing you to body and flute work, playing the piccolo and taking flute choir sessions.

Ian McLauchlan studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and started making headjoints and repairing flutes in 1980.  Since then has established himself as one of the leading Flute Technicians in the UK, maintaining instruments belonging to many professional players. Ian will be talking about how to maintain your flute and carry out simple repairs, as well as explaining how to make a headjoint.

The finale at the end of the day will be when all the workshop participants perform a couple of pieces they have learnt.  This will take place at 5pm and all friends and family are invited. There will also be an opportunity to see Sarah and Paul performing.  Tickets are £5 unless you are attending the workshops.
