'A Western musician may perform this music as a solo for any instrument, or as an ensemble piece for any combination of instruments due to its homophonic (unison) nature. If played by an ensemble, it works best with at least one or two treble instruments (such as flute, oboe, clarinet or violin) and at least one bass instrument (such as cello) with or without percussion (Arabic or Western). The music is well suited to many standard Western ensembles such as the string quartet, woodwind quintet, small jazz ensemble or symphony orchestra. Flute players may wish to experiment using low register piccolo with wide vibrato, and perhaps slightly out of tune in order to duplicate the sound of the Egyptian nay. Again, higher instruments play more of the ornaments and intricate figures and the lower instruments tend to outline the melodies......'
